Happy Father's Day and stuff

I spent very little time on Facebook yesterday, as I want to make more of a habit of doing, enjoying time with my own family while we have the time on weekends rather than whiling away my time on Facebook or reading blogs or whatever else I can find to do online, since I think I do that way more often then I ought. But for the few minutes I was on there I saw scores and scores of my friends wishing their loved ones happy Father's Day and I felt a tiny bit guilty for not coming up with some touching picture of me and my dad or the kids and Bill or some such thing. But then I mentally stopped in my tracks and told myself I'm not required to do that to be grateful for my dad and my husband and all that they do. Because they're awesome, but if I don't tell the whole world about it, that's okay, they still are.

So I didn't do that yesterday and I'm only sort of doing it right now. We did have an exceptionally awesome Father's Day.  Church went well despite having forgotten Spencer's church bag of toys and sundry distractions. We had a fantastic dinner that I thoroughly enjoyed spending several hours in the kitchen putting together. We'll be eating on the strawberry swirl cheesecake all week I'm sure. The kids were generally happy and enjoyable all day, which is not necessarily the truth every day.  The kids and I got Bill some awesome gifts and Bill and I had a lovely time playing his new Parcheesi last night after the kids were in bed. That's one of those games we played together with a friend back in our dating days and it was fun to finally get our own game. And that was about it. It was a good day and when we got to the end of it, we were happy to crash in bed. Life is good around here friends. I'm glad to be living it with my awesome husband and cuter then anything kids.

And here's a few Bill shot of Genevieve this afternoon. Look at those bottom teeth! She's worked hard for those, so we're celebrating having two whole teeth at 9.5 months old. :)
This lady knows how to get in trouble getting all of her brother's drawing supplies. But it's okay because look how cute she is in that outfit!
This is how she carries around the duplo guys all day. It's hilarious and somewhat unfortunate at times, especially as both kids love them, so there are some tears at times over who gets to play with them. Apparently four are not enough for two kids.
Oh, and right before bedtime tonight Genevieve decided to try out standing on her own, not once, but twice! She let go and then wiggled her hips like mad to stay upright. She sat down, hopped back up, and tried it again. She was so pleased. I foresee more of that happening here right quick. She's ready to get moving faster than crawling can do for her.

Great Smoky Mountains Campout

We went camping. It was awesome and like another world compared to camping in the west. I had a hard time comprehending how green it was. From the ground all the way up to the tree canopies there was vegetation. You couldn't even see through the trees, let alone walk through them. It rained like crazy, as we were getting hit with the rain from a tropical storm down in the Gulf. We ate lots of good food, did a bit of hiking, saw the very cool synchronous fireflies, which is why we went, and generally had a good time. Spencer manifested his love of art as he went to town on some nearby rocks with the sidewalk chalk. That kid has flare when it comes to drawing. We got eaten alive by some kind of bugs, though I'm not sure what exactly, while we were watching the fireflies. I've got 15 bites on one foot, 25 or so on the other and about 15 on each hand. Bill got 45 on one calf and shin alone. We won't forget to use our bug spray and wear closed shoes ever again, that's for sure. All in all, it was a fantastic trip. We really, really enjoyed ourselves. We learned lots about the need to entertain children while camping and we'll file that away for future outings.  Oh, and Bill had a total revelation when he saw a Jeep just like ours towing a popup camper. Now he has big dreams for if we had one. Someday...

And now for a few pictures. :)
The campsite.

Spencer sleeping like a champ.

On our hike.

Millipede I think.

The girls.
Mountain flowers.

The girls we were with. There were three boys and Genevieve too.

The boys.

The family.

These girls were great. They were always finding slugs and snails to hold.

Pretty butterfly.

This week in pictures

Bill and I got new bikes. The kids and I have already been out riding. It's awesome. I foresee lots of good times in the future. Spencer has a new little bike too that he'll be able to ride once he learns better how to push the pedals.
Swim diapers are to catch poop, right? So why not just wear underwear? So says Bill, and it seems reasonable to me. So Spencer is modeling his first pair of underwear. :) Someday we'll tell him what it's actually for. lol
What are you guys doing to me?!?! Yup, we just did that.
This is a dress of mine from when I was a baby. She rocked it last Sunday.

Happy baby. I love it when I catch it on camera.
The peppers and basil. Looking good! Can't wait to use these.
I love gardening in South Carolina! The tomatoes are flourishing! The peppers are a little slower, but we're going to have some seriously tasty dinners in not too long.
Story time on the couch in style.

9 Months

I swear this year is just flying by. I didn't realize Genevieve had turned nine months until two days after the fact. Woo! She's still growing like a weed and is just the most delightful child.
She still loves to chew on everything. She only has one tooth and is just about to push through her second, so that accounts for at least some of it.
This is her favorite stuffed dog. It is beloved above all others, save for maybe Spencer's favorite one, his sock monkey. No surprise there. These two love anything the other one has or likes. Pretty typical. They love each other too, so it mostly works out.
She's crawling like crazy, standing against furniture with barely one hand holding on, but only cruising a bit and not really thinking about walking yet. She loves to climb, particularly on me and Bill. I foresee her being my child I find on top of the refrigerator or some other crazy place.
She is still smiley and giggly as can be at home, but very clingy to me when we're out in public. She's just in the last couple days started to crack the stone-faced normal look she gives to everyone she sees out in public. She's starting to share small smiles just as long as she's cuddled up to me while she's doing it. I'm not complaining! Cuddly babies are awesome. I imagine it's as much a phase as anything else, so I'll enjoy her wanting to stick close for the short time I have it. She's very curious about things she sees, so I think she'll start exploring a lot more now that she's so much more mobile.

This may be her best talent. :) Just kidding, but she's quite a good eater of food. lol. She eats anything we put in front of her still. It's fun. She's in the 75th percentile across the board on her stats, so that means she's actually slowed down a bit her growth, which is nice for all the cute clothes she has in this size. She's wearing 12 and 18-month clothes exclusively. She's not small by any  means!

We love this little squish to bits. She truly is just a delightful baby.

Bikes, food, flea markets, and cute kids

I realize I'm late to the party, but we went to our first flea market this morning. It was awesome. We did some research on ones nearby and they each seem to be open a different morning of the week, generally not Saturday. I guess people have better things to do with their Saturday or something like that. Like fishing on the lake. Or doing water sports. Or swimming. Or anything else you can think of with water, as there are three lakes mere miles from our house. Oh, and maybe hiking. Or apparently eating at Waffle House, because despite the roads being completely deserted this morning at 8:30AM, both Waffle Houses we went to were full. We got the last table at the second one and had a fantastic breakfast. Check that off the bucket list. Now on to trying the plethora of one off mom and pop restaurants. I foresee lots of happy taste bud experiences.

But back to the flea market. This place was huge. There had to be hundreds of tables. Only a few were in use, but you could have a seriously huge market there. We found some great kids books for a whopping 27 cents each. That's what I'm talking about! I think I could enjoy doing this for a hobby. We need a new bookshelf though. Ours is now stuffed full. It was nearly there, but it's now reached capacity. I have no problem with this turn of events. :) So yes, more flea markets in our future, and hopefully some farmer's markets mixed in.

Did I mention that we got Spencer his very own bike this last week? He hasn't quite figured out its awesomeness yet, but I have no doubt he will soon enough. He did have a pretty great first reaction to it.

Genevieve is quite pleased with it herself. She regularly crawls over to check it out and make sure it's still there.
Bill got a bike too, but it's still in transit. Once it gets here and is assembled, if it fits me as well I'll be getting the same one and then we'll be off to amazing family bike rides. I can't wait!

And for your viewing pleasure, here's Genevieve playing with Genevieve after her bath last night.

It's always fun when Grandma comes

This is what we do when Grandma comes to visit.

Splash in the puddles
Play with new toys.
Play at the park.

Swing on the swing.
This is the best picture we got of Spencer the whole week. He never stopped moving long enough to get a better one.

Genevieve is perfecting the art of tearing off the label before anybody knows how much money she spent. :)

Deep in contemplation of her new toy.

Slightly fuzzy picture of Spence at the botanical garden.

Bath time! Don't be fooled by their lack of expression. This may be their favorite time of day.

Genevieve appears to take after Spencer in loving water. We were looking at a waterfall at the botanical garden here.

And then there was the time I locked the keys and diaper bag and cell phone in the car. Thank goodness Suzanne was there with her phone! We were at a thrift store so we found a comfy couch to lounge on while we waited for the locksmith to come and bail us out.

A lovely evening walk on Clemson's campus. This is the fountain in front of the library.

See? Spencer loves water, muddy or not.

Oh, I may have been wrong. This is probably the best picture we got this week.
We had a fantastic time hosting Suzanne here and we miss her already. Can't wait to see her and everyone else in July!

King Creek Falls

Another great hike today. We struggled a little to find the trailhead and it was quite short hiking there, but certainly didn't lack for grandeur. Another great afternoon in South Carolina.

The falls were huge and beautiful and had absolutely no safe place for a kid to stand since the windy trail just stopped at the water's edge. So we hiked up, took a few pictures, threw a few rocks, and headed back. A little anti climactic, but we made it a good time.

Spence still loves this carrier. Poor Bill's back, but he's a good sport.

Genevieve loves her carrier too. Aside from not being able to see where I place my feet because of her being in front, it's super comfy to carry her this way.

A trillium. There are probably 30-40 varieties of these in all shades and sizes around here.

These flowers were tiny and delicate and scattered all along the edge of the trail.

A fly catcher!  Bill's sharp eyes noticed this one and we stopped for a picture.

More pretty purple flowers.

Success! Spencer spent some of the time walking himself, of course with a couple of sticks.

And then he got tired and we ended up putting him back in the carrier.  Cheers to at least a little effort on his part hiking with us. It's a start.

Awesome Spence

More twinners. I need to get in the game and get some matching shirts myself.
I've typically done a monthly post for both kids for their first year, then slowed down on that, but Spencer needs an update post of what he's doing these days too.

-He talks up a storm. He talks in full sentences, but is not super interactive in how he talks. For example, he will not answer a yes or no question. If you ask him one, he'll either not answer or answer it with some kind of description. He seems to have a need to describe what he sees around him, which is fun to watch. He has quite a large vocabulary in that respect, so it's fun to see what he comes up with.

-He has first and second person completely mixed up. He refers to himself as your and everyone else as my. When he says I he is referring to whoever he is talking to. It took Bill and I quite a while to figure this out, but now that we understand that, he's really quite good at communicating what he's thinking. I imagine at some point it will click in his head to switch that around, but for now it's a very endearing little quirk in his speaking ability.

-He also loves technology. He has a number of different games he loves to play on our tablets. I, like most other parents I interact with, definitely question the amount of time he should be spending playing the tablet, but I play it by ear for now instead of having a hard fast rule. That's partly why his vocabulary is so huge because most of his games are vocabulary-based. It's an interesting line to walk and try to figure out.

-He loves to be outside. We don't have quite as good a place for him to play right outside our door, so I'm looking for ways to help him be outside more, but he's in heaven whenever we're outside. Yesterday I took him out on a walk in our complex while Bill made dinner with Genevieve and we walked up to the road and watched all the cars drive by. He told me the color and type of every car that drove by. "Red truck! White van! Blue Car!" He calls SUVs vans. It was rather difficult to convince him to come back home, even though it started to pour while we were out. We had a great time jumping in the puddles and looking at the flowers and generally getting soaked on the short walk back to our apartment. When it rains here, it rains hard.

-Speaking of water, Spencer loves it. If we can, we'll put him in swimming lessons this summer. I'm pretty sure he'll be like a fish in the water. He loves to play in the rain, jump in puddles, loves bath time, loves to play in the water in the sink, etc.

-Spencer loves to climb, jump, roll, etc. He learned how to do a somersault the other day. He's always running all over our apartment. We need to get him a bike and soon. He'd love it.

-He still loves to read. He will spend hours during his quiet time reading all his books while leaning against his bed. He constantly talks to himself and if I listen, what I hear is him reciting lines from his different books. He loves his Dr. Seuss books more than any other, particularly The Bippolo Seed, The Sneetches, Oh the Places You'll Go, The Sleep Book, and The Lorax. He also is a fan of The Little Red Hen, The Three Billy Goats Gruff, and a bunch of others I can't think of at the moment. Oh, he loves the Pepper Book, which is what he calls the How are you Peeling book his aunt gave him when we moved. Total win there.

-He loves to go to the park. His favorite things there are the big slides and the swings. He seems to have no fear of the height of any slide. He just zooms down them again and again.

-His favorite foods at the moment are graham crackers and peanut butter, wheat thins, and normal toast with butter and honey, all asked for in his cute singsong voice. He loves dessert when we make it available. He likes milk and apple juice, and wants a cup of each with the same amount in each cup. Bill and I never cease to be amazed with how happy he can be when he gets the particular thing he wants. His attention to detail is impressive, as well as his dismay when we haven't figured it out yet.

-He's very tidy. He doesn't like to be dirty. So if he spills stuff on his shirt he wants to take it off. If he gets food on his hands, he needs to wipe them off right away. He'd rather have his shoes off at the park then get sand in them. I can see the logic in that. I sometimes get caught off guard without a change of clothes for him or a rag handy.

-He likes order. He lines his hot wheels cars up in a row. He puts his favorite little books in a pile all in the same direction and exactly aligned.

-He loves his fringed pillow and blanket set from my mom. It's fleece and it's not that he won't sleep without it, but he settles right in when he has it. Sometimes he pulls them out to different places in the apartment and wants to be read to while holding and laying on them. He also really likes his sock monkey from GiGi. We tie the legs in knots and he unties them. We sing Snowman using it as the prop. He just loves it.

-He's recently taken a liking to our bocce ball set, and it's one area where he's learning to share with Genevieve. Half the balls are hers and half are his and he'll remind himself and whoever is around of that whenever he's playing with them. "Spencer's ball. Genevieve's ball. Spencer's ball..."

-He really loves Genevieve. He is so excited to go and get her whenever she wakes up from a nap. He climbs in her crib and plays with her and then bounces like crazy in the crib. He's rather bothered when I take her out. He loves to give her hugs and kisses. He was a bit surprised today when she used him as a climbing station and essentially wrestled him to the ground, but I'm sure he'll catch on soon enough. He has wanted to play with her for months, so now that she is getting better at interacting back, I think he'll learn quickly how fun it can be. I think they're going to be best buds.

-He loves nursery at church. He struggled with it the first few months we were here, but he's a big fan now.

And that's all I can think for the moment. He's such a fun kid. Trying to keep up with him is making Bill and I stretch and grow as parents, but it's sure fun.

She's growing like a weed

Twinners. And a very halfhearted smile on Genevieve's part.
Genevieve has been learning so many new skills lately that I wanted to write them down here, lest I forget by the time I write her 9-month post.

-She started crawling the day she turned 8 months old. Now she crawls all over the place and she's less and less daunted by how far she has to go to get something. She doesn't like crawling on the hard floor in the dining room though. I think she slips and she doesn't like it.

-She started pulling herself up on things shortly after starting to crawl. Her favorite targets are Bill and I. She climbs all over us and delights to just stand against my shoulder or knees. She can also get up on Spencer's toddler bed and our mattress, which is still on the floor of our room.

-She's not really cruising much, but she is quite stable. I wouldn't be surprised if she learned to stand on her own before she walks.

-She is so, so, so animated and smiley at home. In public she almost never smiles. People try so hard to get her to smile and she skunks them nearly every time. It's like she's far too intent on taking everything in to bother with smiling.

-She still loves to eat. She'll try anything. In fact, she's becoming a human vacuum, something her brother never did. She finds things on the floor all the time and it's straight to her mouth.

-She just got her first tooth poking through yesterday. I can see both top and bottom ones in her gums, but they're taking their good sweet time actually coming in. So when she eats, she is still gumming everything. It doesn't really stop her from trying, but I'm not sure how much stuff she really swallows depending on what food it is.

-This leads to her not sleeping through the night anymore. She stopped about a week ago and now wakes up at least once a night, sometimes more. Actually, more than teething I think what is causing that is she is so intent on taking in everything around her that I struggle to get her to nurse for any normal amount of time. She's so easily distracted and she would much rather watch Spencer or anything else going on around her than nurse. I guess I could start feeding her normal food in bigger quantities and that might help balance it out.

-She loves technology. Spencer is rather dismayed at how much she wants to play with our tablets when he has them. Actually, now that she can crawl, he's dismayed in general because she takes all his toys. He doesn't quite know what to do about that. I don't have the heart to tell him how his world is never going to be the same. :)

-She loves my hair and pulls on it anytime she can. I think this was about the time I cut it short when Spencer was this age. I like it long for now though, so I'm just learning to move it out of her reach.

-She sticks her tongue out all the time, particularly when she's happy. She's started clapping too. She's such a charmer when she does it.

-When she's sitting in her booster seat, she likes to tilt her head to either side and kind of lay it down. If we mimic her and then switch sides, she'll follow. It's adorable. I think I'm saying that a lot, but it's really a good word to describe her. :)

-She has super fair skin and I can't seem to cut her nails often enough to keep her from scratching the top of her nose right next to her left eye. She has a perpetual cut there that hasn't healed in weeks. She still has red hair, albeit very light. It's thickening up and so far it's straight. I can't imagine any of our kids will keep straight hair forever, but they seem to have it for now.

-She loves to be sung to. She'll start smiling and clapping and it pulls her right out of any bad mood.

-She and Spencer love taking baths together now. She's steady enough to have graduated into the big tub and Spencer always requests to have her in there with him.

-She is back to liking the front pack I carry her in. She didn't like it for a few months, but she's super comfy in it now and will sleep in it even.

-She still loves her stuffed animals and blankets. She sucks her thumb and first finger and holds onto a stuffed animal whenever we put her down to sleep. She only does it then, which is interesting.

-She LOVES Spencer. The fastest thing to get her sad is if he runs away and she thinks she can't follow. She wants to be everywhere he is and do everything he's doing. He alternately loves and hates it. He loves her to pieces, but is quite startled at how much she can get into of his now.

-She's pretty attached to me too. She's not as good a self entertainer as I would like. But I suspect it's because she's bored with her current toys because she plays really well on her own if she's interested. We just need to pull out some new toys for her and let her explore them. We have a plethora of toys in Spencer's toy box that I need to try out on her.

-Oh, and lest it seem like she doesn't like her daddy, she adores him. In fact, though she doesn't talk much, she often says what could reasonably be construed as "daddy." He certainly takes it as such and I see no reason to argue. lol

So that was longer than I expected, but since I use this blog for my journal as much as anything, I'm okay with that. :)

First campout of the year

We celebrated the successful completion of Bill's first semester of grad school by going on a campout! Actually it was a total coincidence and we barely made it to the campout by dinnertime because Bill had so much stuff to finish up to the very last moment, but we still had a great time.

It's the first time we've been camping with Genevieve and we did build her an awesome port-a-crib for the occasion. We're going out to Utah this summer to visit family and drive our Jeep back home to South Carolina and we'll need something to put her in when we're camping along the way. We left the pack'n'play in Utah because Spencer jumped in it a few too many times and put a huge divit in the floor of it. Plus, it weighed a ton, so no loss there. This new crib is fantastic. It's just PVC pipe and a mesh frame I spent several days making this week. We folded up a spare foam pad to put in as a floor, put a couple blankets on top of it, and she was good to go for the entire night. I'll have to take a picture sometime, but I have no intention of setting it up for the hundredth time to do that at the moment. It was quite the trick getting the frame sewn and involved taking it apart and putting it together more times than I can count, but I got a steal of a deal on mesh for $1 a yard, so I certainly am not complaining. The connector pieces for the pipe cost more than anything else in the whole project, but it still cost under $25 to build.

So back to the campout. It was awesome. It was with our ward and at a campground right on Lake Hartwell.  The entire campground is on the water. We camped in quite the storm. It was nice enough to hold off for most of the evening and limit itself to wind and clouds, but we got hammered with rain all night long. Our tent didn't leak even a bit and Bill guyed it out, so we didn't even have condensation on the walls. That's what I call a successful camping trip. :)

The kids didn't do too bad. Spencer took forever to fall asleep and slept on top of rather than in his sleeping bag. Genevieve conked out early and Spencer woke her up once and she woke up once, which isn't normal, but for a first campout I'll totally take it. Bill and I didn't fair so well as we both worried about the kids being warm enough and all kinds of other things like that, so we were tired, but who even cares? We had a good time and that's what matters. We'll definitely be doing more camping this summer. It's going to be awesome.
